A Piece of Denwerks History - A Rare Find - 1968 AMC AMX with 16k Miles
Hello from Denwerks! The blog is up and live again after a break, and we are here to share some amazing vehicles we've been involved with. We're kicking it off with this beauty. A 1968 AMC AMX that we sold in 2017. Remember this one? Read on, it is worth remembering the history and some impressive features this car had.
This 1968 AMC AMX is a factory 4-speed car equipped with a 390ci V8. The AMX was only produced as a standalone-model from 1968-1970, and just 2,100 of the first-year cars featured the V8 and manual combination.
The story
This one shows an impressive low 16k miles and was purchased on Bring a Trailer in 2016 and is being offered by the same seller on behalf of the current owner. The car’s third owner began this example’s restoration using a lifelong-Oregon car as a basis, and the seller completed the restoration before selling the car last year.
This AMX was offered by Denwerks in 2017 on consignment with a clean Oregon title in the current owner’s name.
The body was been repainted in its original Hialeah Yellow and wears a dealer-installed Group 19 stainless steel chin spoiler and twin black stripes. New wipers and wiper arms were fitted, and the car wears Magnum 500 wheels.
Prior rust repair was limited to the bottom corner behind the passenger side rear wheel. The car was claimed to be rust-free, and the sills, rockers, door jambs, and trunk floor all appeared original according to the seller.
The original undercoating is still present on the underside of the car. This AMX is said to feature correct instrumentation, including a working clock, a stock Hurst shifter, and an optional tach. A period-correct aftermarket radio is fitted, though it is missing a speaker.
All of the instruments work, including the fuel gauge and temperature following the installation of new senders. The seats are upholstered in tight-fitting, correct dot-pattern material, and the black carpets were very clean. Custom AMX-logo floor mats were included with the sale.
16k miles were shown on the odometer, which was one of the best features of the car.
Per the X and M in the VIN, it was a factory 390ci V8, 4-speed car. The current engine displaced 390ci, but is based around a 343ci block which has been overbored. The intake, carburetor, valve covers, air cleaner, and oil pan on the current motor are correct AMX items.
The only noted issues were limited to some very light seepage from the Borg-Warner T-10 4-Speed and from the front pinion seal. The seepage only amounted to a small drop on the floor after the car sat for about a week. The transmission featured a recent Centerforce clutch.
